Satisfying a Craving at Cold Spring Pizza

Colds Spring Pizza Store FrontNext to hamburgers, hot dogs, and good old apple pie, the American food you see everywhere is pizza and take-out Chinese, the american variety of both of course. I’ve observed in my travels around our great country that it seems that just about every town, small or large, has a take-out Chinese place and a pizza parlor. Unfortunately, usually they are mediocre or worse.

I’ve passed the two we have here on Main Street in Cold Spring, and wondered, could they be the exception to the rule?  Good? The Chinese takeout, I understand is not. But when struck by an irresistible craving for a slice of pizza the other day, we decided to take a chance on this local place. We were pleasantly surprised how good satisfying three slices were… Continue reading Satisfying a Craving at Cold Spring Pizza

Our First Dinner at Riverview Restaurant Cold Spring

Riverview View enhancedSince we first arrived in Garrison people have been encouraging us to try the Cold Spring restaurant Riverview. Since 1941 a popular destination for tourists and hikers alike, and for many loyal local patrons, especially on Wednesday “Pizza Night” when a lower priced Prix Fixe menu is offered.

On our visit this past Wednesday Riverview was busy with lots of regulars, couples, small groups and large parties. For the most part we enjoyed our dinner very much. Continue reading Our First Dinner at Riverview Restaurant Cold Spring

Nice Dinner at Maya Cafe & Cantina

Maya Cafe Cantina FishkillWe like good Mexican every so often and have passed this place on Route 9 in Fishkill dozens of times. Any place with Maya in its name brings back sweet memories of our happy vacations on the Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal. We had read good things about this place but our old favorite Taqueria Autentica near Montclair is so good, a hard act to beat.

Motown Rocks and Japanese Delights at Quinn’s in Beacon

Quinns Beacon Dining Room

After getting a taste of  Yukie Schmitz’s fine home-style Japanese cuisine at a Manitoga event this past Saturday, we could not wait to get to the restaurant her husband Tom and she opened recently in the old Quinn’s Luncheonette in Beacon — for more!

Last night they were also hosting a Motown DJ which was great incentive too, we loved both. Or should I say everything! Fabulous Japanese small plates and noodle dishes, great booze, and sweet music. All in a place with classic atmosphere and great staff. Continue reading Motown Rocks and Japanese Delights at Quinn’s in Beacon

Yes, Sir, That’s Some Mighty Fine
Texas BBQ!

Roundup Texas BBQ Cold SpringWe’ve had a hankering to try the local BBQ place our friends have been raving about.  Located outside of town a bit south of 301 on Route 9 Cold Spring, Roundup Texas BBQ & Tumbleweed Saloon looks a lot like a place you find down south.

We enjoyed our dinner which included a tasting of several meats and sides.  Continue reading Yes, Sir, That’s Some Mighty Fine

Tasty Eats at CathyShack Fiskkill

CathyShack Menu

I spotted this cute little food truck while shopping at the fabulous Willow Ridge Nursery a week ago. It looked so inviting I just had to give it a try. Stopped by for lunch, tried three tasty dishes and was quite happy.

Cathy, who runs her lunch place 7 days a week, also a farmers market come July, makes a special effort to serve a fresh seasonal menu of good homemade foods. There are delicious fresh salads, tangy chili, Mexican delights, a really good hot dog, the most heavenly corn bread you will ever eat and more. The blackboard menus change daily, but you can count on finding something you’ll like. Continue reading Tasty Eats at CathyShack Fiskkill

Toro Korean and Japanese Dining
in Fishkill

Toro Fishkill Sushi BarThursday night dinner at Toro in Fishkill. Friends recommended this place. We enjoyed the Korean more than the Japanese. Great sake list! Will be back for sake and cooked small plates.

We like sharing our restaurant discoveries, hope you like reading them. But I am so done with food pictures! Taking them and posting them. So you won’t be seeing them here anymore. I leave that to the pros.

Also we are adopting a simple restaurant rating scale. Three levels. Definitely going back soon, will go back, wont be going back.  Now since we have dozens of places to try the return trip may take awhile, but you get the idea. Toro fell into category two. Finally Found a Thai Place We Really Like – Golden Buddha in Fishkill

Golden Buddha Thai Fishkill Fine Wines and Beers and Cocktails

Our friend Joanne told me this place was great, then terrible, now she heard it is great again, new ownership since August. We decided to give it a try.

I used to try and do real restaurant reviews and such, but it is all so subjective, so I stopped. I guess the bottom line is that we were happy enough with Golden Buddha that we are looking forward to going back.  There are a few reasons.

The staff here are nice, genuinely interested and the food was very good, we had just sampling of some basics. Is that enough? No it’s not.  There are lot of interesting dishes on the menu, beyond the typical Thai fare, we want to try. The wine list is well considered. I will tell you why. Lastly the dinning room is appealing with a calming modern ambiance.

Birdsall House, Craft Beer Gastropub, Peekskill NY

Bridsall House

Is another bar we really like

for their great beer selection,  delicious food, and friendly atmosphere.  Set in a bar that had been a Peekskill fixture for decades, Tim Reinke co-owner of the Blind Tiger Ale House, a famous beer pub in New York City, and Gleason’s restaurant in Peekskill, modestly renovated, majorly cleaned, and opened this place with John Sharp, also of Gleason’s, in 2010.

They saw an opportunity in the renewal of Peekskill, that is now really starting to take shape, at least as far as the food and drink scene go. Continue reading Birdsall House, Craft Beer Gastropub, Peekskill NY
