SherryFest Comes to Beacon at Artisan Wine Shop

Sherry Fest NYC Pour

The last time you had sherry was probably as an ingredient in a recipe. You may even have a bottle on a shelf somewhere.  May I make a suggestion? Throw that old bottle away, it is spoiled. Go to your nearest fine wine store and buy some good sherry, we recommend Artisan Wines in Beacon. Try a few, demi-sec or dry, you will love them.

This weekend in New York City is SherryFest, a huge event that celebrates and promotes the exciting resurgence of this wonderful but much maligned Spanish fortified wine. A wonderful drink that is enjoying a huge surge in popularity as many great sherry makers of old and new are turning out better and better quality. You can go to SherryFest or stop by Artisan for their Saturday tasting. Continue reading SherryFest Comes to Beacon at Artisan Wine Shop

Marnie Hillsley Always in Our Heart

Marnie HillsleyMarney Hillsley will always be a dear friend of ours, and will forevermore be remembered by us and the many people in her life, in our community, that loved and admired here so much.

We were so moved and inspired by the words, poems and songs shared at her memorial service this past Saturday at St. Philip’s Church of the Highlands.

Marney’s spirit will be with us eternally, as will the positive changes she made to world in her life.

Sunday Poem – California Prodigal

Sand Dollar Beach View

BY MAYA ANGELOU

The eye follows, the land

Slips upward, creases down, forms
The gentle buttocks of a young
Giant. In the nestle,
Old adobe bricks, washed of
Whiteness, paled to umber,
Await another century.
Star Jasmine and old vines
Lay claim upon the ghosted land,
Then quiet pools whisper
Private childhood secrets.
Flush on inner cottage walls
Antiquitous faces,
Used to the gelid breath
Of old manors, glare disdainfully
Over breached time.
Around and through these
Cold phantasmatalities,
He walks, insisting
To the languid air,
Activity, music,
A generosity of graces.
His lupin fields spurn old
Deceit and agile poppies dance
In golden riot.   Each day is
Fulminant, exploding brightly
Under the gaze of his exquisite
Sires, frozen in the famed paint
Of dead masters. Audacious
Sunlight casts defiance
At their feet.

Since 1941 a popular destination for tourists and hikers alike, and for many loyal local patrons, especially on Wednesday “Pizza Night” when a lower priced Prix Fixe menu is offered.

On our visit this past Wednesday Riverview was busy with lots of regulars, couples, small groups and large parties. For the most part we enjoyed our dinner very much. Continue reading Our First Dinner at Riverview Restaurant Cold Spring

Bobal, a Wine You Never Heard of but are Bound to Love

Senorio de Iniesta Bobal RoseLast week we joined friends in New York City for a screening of a documentary La Bobal Revisted  “the Cinderella story about an unappreciated grape.” Bobal is Spain’s second most widely planted, yet to the world virtually unknown, because it was up until a few years ago only used in the background as a blending grape for wines of more prominent name. Never considered to be worthy of standing alone.

Turns out with caring conscientious growing and vinting practices, Bobal by itself can become a very wonderful wine. We tasted a few at the screening, and the next day excited to find this Bobal Rose at Viscount Wine in Wappinger Falls. Continue reading Bobal, a Wine You Never Heard of but are Bound to Love
