The “Bunueloni” a Unique Cocktail from a Very Unique Filmaker

BunuelMartiniI think Luis Bunuel would have been very comfortable here today in the Hudson Valley.  We enjoy his outlook on life.

He once said.  “If you were to ask me if I’d ever had the bad luck to miss my daily cocktail, I’d have to say that I doubt it; where certain things are concerned, I plan ahead.”

And as are we with a drink of his own design. Negroni # 80 “The Bunueloni”

Hiking at Manitoga
Two Days – Two Paths

Manitoga Lost Pond Reflections

Near the crest of the Lost Pond Trail at Manitoga you will come upon a moving site, inspiring and quieting at the same moment. Named with the Algonquin word meaning “Place of the Great Spirit,” Manitoga is so filled with the spiritual essence of its creator, you can truly feel it.

We walked two of the longer paths here on a cloudy day and then one filled with sun.

Manitoga Paths Diana Happy

This was the home of Russel Wright, the renowned forward thinking industrial designer. Created out of a desolate area that had been a quarry.  The house can be toured by special arrangements but the paths in the 75 acre woodland garden can be walked whenever the property is open.

Manitoga Paths Accross the Meadow is a map and guideBeautiful on a cloudy or sunny day the paths ascend in a winding pattern ascending in stages as much 650 feet through the woods.

Manitoga Red Hat HikerEntry is from Route 9D, there is a parking lot.  Visitors first stop into the visitors center to sign in, get information and make a donation.

We walked the longer White Pine Loop marked with red and Lost Pond Loop marked with white.

They travel together foe awhile and then branch off. The paths are meant to be walked in one direction, each a loop, the markers with a block dot indicate you are heading the wrong way.

At points you will come to two bridges that go over the stream.

Each step of the way feels rich and fulfilling, I really felt the love and attention that went into creating this place. And all the enjoyment that people have had here. There are spots where you can catch glimpses of the house.

And the mighty Hudson River. At least now that the leaves have fallen.

As Much as We Love the Hudson Valley, McLaren Vale Keeps Calling

They say Mclaren Vale is the unique marriage of a premier wine region and beach lifestyle has created a melting pot for all things culinary, vinous and artistic. You could say that the Hudson Valley is a unique marriage of a great wine region and river valley lifestyle and so on.

Well bringing this back home, during a trip to Australia I fell in love with the rich, robust, Shiraz wines of this region. I buy them when ever I see them at a reasonable price. This one found at Dylan’s in Peekskill was not just reasonable it is a steal.

Wines from this region are exciting and delicious and pair well with many dishes, even a Tonkotsu Ramen we had last night.

A Precarious Path along the River at Manitou Point Preserve

Manitou Point Crashing Waves of the Hudson

Stories of the Hudson Valley do not reveal why this picturesque spot overlooking the river was once called Mystery Point. It has a narrow path that almost dares you to jump. Now called Manitou Point Preserve it is a easy yet exciting walk.

Today it is protected through efforts of Open Space Institute and Scenic Hudson and with the generosity of John Stryker a philanthropist from Kalamazoo, Michigan. One of the many great joys of living here is our discovery that the many ardent friends of the Hudson Valley come from some of the most unlikely places. Stagnant Employment & Wages? Not in the Hudson Valley Food & Beverage Biz!

HVEDN

You may live here and probably know. It is not hard to notice. Seems like everyday we see a new restaurant, brewer, food maker or purveyor etc. popping up in the Hudson Valley.

Recently we got the real stats.  Presented at the exciting 2015 Hudson Valley Beer, Wine, Spirits & Cider Summit, an annual event of the Hudson Valley Food & Beverage Alliance “fueled by” Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation.

So the news is this, over 57,000 people are employed by HV based Food and Bev businesses which represents growth of 20% in employment numbers over the last five years with a healthy 7.5% growth rate in wages.

Why does this make us happy? Continue reading Stagnant Employment & Wages? Not in the Hudson Valley Food & Beverage Biz!

Our Favorite Wine this Week is from Puglia

Zum_Martin_Sepp_Zweigelt_1024x1024

Yes, as you have no doubt noticed, we love our wine, and cocktails, and beer. Among the top 1% of consumers I suspect.  We love to share our discoveries, especially the good and moderately priced ones.

This beautifully crafted wine is from Puglia, Italy.  A place we are particularly fond of, the culture, people, cuisine and wine. We spent some time there a few years ago.

With a Smile

Negroamaro is one of the predominant red grapes of Puglia and this wine, which I found at Dylan’s Wine Cellar in Peekskill is another fabulous MARC DE GRAZIA SELECTIONS. We generally love all his wines.

Salento Negroamaro Masserie Pizari has powerful body, clean and flavorful fruit structures, and evolves and changes as it breaths. As we finished the bottle it was giving fabulous creamy vanilla notes.

It is made n southern Salento, in an area called Feudo d’Ugento where Negroamaro has grown for centuries. The estate was founded by Giordano Emo Capodilista and Francesco Marra, in 2005. Today the vineyard is overseen by  Francesco and the winery by Oenologist Andrea Boaretti. They keep the yield and production low to ensure the highest quality wines.

At $13 or $10.50 in a mixed case this wine is sensational. Dylan’s Wine Cellar

Cocktails in Grand Central

Cipriani Dolci Serious Drinks

If you find yourself with some time before your train back north there are some nice places to enjoy a cocktail before your departure.

We were in the City for a day of shopping, strolling movies and dinner. A little celebration for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was about 8:45 and our train was not departing until 9:24.

We tried The Campbell Apartment, a fabulous bar and restaurant set in what was once the private office and salon of 1920’s tycoon, John W. Campbell. But, the patrons were three deep at the bar and the noise level was too loud. Campbell Apartment

So we wandered across the hall to Cipriani Dolci, both are easily accessed from the Vanderbilt Avenue entrance of Grand Central.  Here we found an uncrowded bar and enjoyed two excellent cocktails.

A classic Negroni

We have a special place in our heart for the Cipriani establishments, they bring back sweet memories of sipping Bellinis at Harry’s Bar in Venice.

Our first visit to Harry’s was in June of 1985, the year we were engaged and married.
